A name establishes the essence of an identity. Our identity is shaped by sophia, which is Greek for wisdom. This word was used to describe the aim of the ancient philosophers and articulated the heart of the Hebrew vision of intelligence. For ancient Christianity, sophia was proclaimed to be perfectly embodied in the person of Jesus Christ. Through him, wisdom becomes sanctified, or holy. For us, holy wisdom is the purpose of education.

Additionally, St. Sophia was a 2nd Century Christian woman who exemplifies the wisdom for which our school seeks to lead each student. Unwilling to bow to the wishes of the pagan Roman Empire, she faithfully discerned the path of true life. Through her faithful devotion to Christ, she learned to bear her heavy cross, becoming a living embodiment of our Lord’s teaching, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” In doing so, she left this life giving us a beautiful example of the faith, knowledge, and virtue that leads to true wisdom.
